The university’s forerunner, Napier Technical College, was established in 1964 and was named after Scottish mathematician and philosopher John Napier, who lived in the 16th century. In 1992, Lord Douglas-Hamilton officially established the technical college as Napier University. The university’s name was changed to Edinburgh Napier University in 2009.
