In Edinburgh, Scotland, there is a public institution called Edinburgh Napier University. The university's forerunner, Napier Technical College, was established in 1964 and was named after Scottish mathematician and philosopher John Napier, who lived in the 16th century. In 1992, Lord Douglas-Hamilton officially established the technical college as Napier University. The university's name was changed to Edinburgh Napier University in 2009.
